maybe a story is told

to fit

a preconceived notion of you

a judgment

a limited understanding

maybe stories

are spun with golden thread

to make them seem

more inviting

more true

at least to you

maybe stories protect us

from being led astray

or comfort us

from the horrors

of the day

it’s funny though

how we play telephone

switching narratives

to make sense of

what we’ve heard

it all comes down to

word of mouth

the tone of voice

if things go south

to process

you must create

so tell it like it is

your story is worth hearing

your narrative is not his
